
QC Test Standards for Finished Stand-Up Pouches
Finished stand-up pouches should undergo systematic quality control before shipment to verify package integrity, dimensional accuracy, sealing performance, barrier protection, and functional reliability. Testing requirements should be established according to the product, pouch structure, filling process, and customer specifications.
Dimensional Inspection
Measure the finished pouch for width, height, gusset depth, seal width, zipper position, and spout position where applicable. Measurements should remain within approved tolerances to ensure compatibility with filling equipment and consistent shelf appearance.
Visual inspection should also identify wrinkles, scratches, contamination, delamination, printing defects, and deformation.
Seal Strength Testing
Heat seals are critical to package integrity. Seal strength should be tested according to ASTM F88/F88M or another applicable internal specification.
Samples should be taken from representative production batches, with attention given to different sealing locations. Results should meet the minimum strength required for the intended application.
Leak Testing
Leak testing helps identify incomplete seals, pinholes, channel leaks, and component-sealing problems. ASTM F2096 can be used for gross leak detection by internal pressurization, while ASTM D3078 provides a bubble-emission method for flexible packaging.
For liquid or high-risk products, additional pressure or vacuum testing may be appropriate.
Barrier Performance
When barrier protection is required, finished packaging or representative material samples can be evaluated for Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) and Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR).
Common references include ASTM D3985 for oxygen transmission and ASTM F1249 or ISO 15106 for water vapor transmission. Test conditions should be clearly defined because temperature and humidity can significantly affect results.
Functional Testing
For zipper pouches, check opening force, closing performance, alignment, and resealing reliability. For spouted pouches, inspect cap fit, spout attachment, dispensing performance, and leakage resistance.
Filled-pouch standing tests should also be performed to confirm bottom gusset stability and resistance to deformation.
Appearance and Packaging Inspection
Final inspection should verify print quality, color consistency, surface cleanliness, pouch quantity, carton labeling, and packaging condition. Nonconforming products should be identified, segregated, and handled according to the company's quality procedures.
