
Stand-Up Pouch Material Selection Guide
Choosing the right material is one of the most important decisions when developing a stand-up pouch. The material structure affects product shelf life, barrier performance, sealing strength, print quality, durability, appearance, and overall packaging cost. Instead of using one material for every product, the pouch should be selected according to the product characteristics, storage conditions, filling process, and required shelf life.
Understanding the Basic Material Structure
Most stand-up pouches use a multilayer laminated structure, with each layer performing a specific function. The outer layer normally provides printing quality, strength, and dimensional stability. A middle layer may provide oxygen, moisture, or light protection, while the inner layer acts as the heat-sealing and product-contact layer.
Common materials include PET, BOPP, PE, CPP, PA, aluminum foil, metallized PET, EVOH, and kraft paper. The final structure can be customized by combining different layers according to the application.
PET and BOPP for Strength and Printing
PET and BOPP are commonly used as outer layers because they provide good mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and attractive printing surfaces. PET is particularly suitable for detailed graphics and applications requiring greater structural stability, while BOPP is widely used for snack and dry-food packaging.
PE and CPP for Heat Sealing
PE and CPP are commonly selected as inner sealing layers. They provide flexibility and reliable heat sealing, helping maintain package integrity during filling, transportation, and storage. The sealant should be matched to the packaging machine and product to achieve consistent sealing performance.
Choosing the Right Barrier Layer
The required barrier level depends on the product's primary risks, such as moisture, oxygen, light, aroma loss, or grease migration. Aluminum foil provides very high protection against oxygen, moisture, and light, making it suitable for coffee, tea, sensitive foods, and products requiring extended shelf life.
For products that need product visibility, clear high-barrier films using technologies such as EVOH or transparent barrier coatings can provide oxygen protection while maintaining transparency. Metallized PET offers another option when strong barrier performance and a metallic appearance are required.
Match the Material to the Product
For dry snacks, nuts, candy, and dried fruit, structures such as PET/PE or BOPP-based laminates may provide an appropriate balance of protection and cost. Coffee and aroma-sensitive products generally require stronger oxygen and aroma barriers, while heavy pet food may require greater puncture resistance and seal strength.
