
Common Stand-Up Pouch Defects and Troubleshooting
Stand-up pouch quality can be affected by material variation, printing problems, lamination defects, forming errors, and unstable sealing conditions. Early identification of defects is essential for maintaining package integrity, appearance, and production efficiency.
Poor Standing Stability
If a filled pouch tilts, collapses, or has an uneven bottom, possible causes include incorrect bottom gusset dimensions, inaccurate folding, uneven material tension, or excessive product loading.
Check the gusset depth, bottom fold position, pouch dimensions, and forming alignment. Conduct filled-pouch testing to confirm that the design provides adequate stability.
Seal Leakage
Leakage is one of the most critical defects. It may result from insufficient sealing temperature, inadequate pressure or dwell time, contaminated sealing areas, wrinkles, or incompatible sealing layers.
Inspect the sealing surface and verify process parameters. Seal-strength and leak tests should be performed to identify weak areas and confirm corrective actions.
Wrinkles and Deformation
Wrinkles may occur during lamination, slitting, forming, or heat sealing. Common causes include uneven film tension, poor web alignment, excessive sealing temperature, or improper machine adjustment.
Check film tension and alignment throughout the production line and ensure that sealing conditions remain within the recommended operating range.
Delamination
Delamination occurs when laminated layers separate. It can be caused by insufficient adhesive bonding, incorrect adhesive ratio, inadequate curing, contamination, or excessive processing stress.
Review adhesive application and curing conditions and inspect the laminate for bubbles, tunnels, and separation before pouch conversion.
Zipper or Spout Problems
Zippers may become difficult to open, fail to close properly, or become misaligned. Spouted pouches may develop leaks around the spout flange or cap.
Check component positioning, material compatibility, sealing temperature, and sealing pressure. Functional and leakage testing should be included in routine QC.
Printing Defects
Common printing problems include color variation, poor registration, smearing, scratches, and weak ink adhesion. Verify ink, substrate surface condition, printing parameters, and drying performance.
Corrective Action
Troubleshooting should follow a systematic process: identify the defect, determine the likely process cause, adjust one parameter at a time, and verify the result through testing. Production records and defect data should be maintained to prevent recurring problems.
