
Filling & Vacuuming Process Considerations
The filling and vacuuming stages are critical to the performance of three-side seal vacuum bags. Proper process control helps achieve accurate filling, stable vacuum levels, reliable seals, and consistent package appearance. The process should be matched to the product characteristics, film structure, and packaging equipment.
Product Preparation and Filling
Before filling, the product should be properly prepared and free from excessive moisture, sharp contaminants, or foreign materials that could damage the film.
The filling quantity should be accurately controlled. Overfilling can increase stress on the seals and reduce vacuum efficiency, while underfilling may result in excessive empty space and poor package presentation.
For meat, seafood, cheese, and other products with irregular shapes, sufficient clearance should be maintained to reduce the risk of puncture.
Sealing Area Protection
Keeping the sealing area clean is essential. Product particles, liquids, oils, or powders trapped between film layers can create weak seals and potential leakage channels.
Filling equipment should be adjusted to minimize product contamination around the opening. The bag opening should remain properly positioned during filling.
Vacuuming Process
During vacuuming, air is removed from the package before the final seal is created. The vacuum level should be appropriate for the product and film structure.
Excessive vacuum pressure may increase film deformation, puncture risk, and stress on the seals, while insufficient vacuum may leave excessive residual air and reduce packaging efficiency.
Vacuum time, chamber pressure, sealing temperature, and dwell time should be optimized together.
Product Positioning
The product should be distributed appropriately before vacuuming. Sharp edges, bones, hard particles, or concentrated product loads can create localized stress.
Proper product positioning reduces puncture risk and helps the film conform evenly around the contents.
Sealing After Vacuuming
The sealing process must create a continuous and strong seal after air removal. Temperature, pressure, and dwell time should be controlled according to the sealant layer.
The sealing jaws should remain clean and correctly aligned to prevent incomplete seals, wrinkles, and deformation.
Quality Inspection
Finished packages should be checked for vacuum retention, seal strength, leakage, film damage, appearance, and dimensional consistency. ASTM F88/F88M can be used for seal-strength evaluation, while ASTM F2096 or ASTM D3078 can support leak testing.
Process Optimization
A stable filling and vacuuming process should combine accurate dosing, clean sealing areas, controlled vacuum levels, reliable sealing, and regular equipment inspection. Production trials using the actual product are recommended before full-scale manufacturing.
